Global Positioning System (GPS)

Due to the size and situation of Fire Mountain Scout Camp, there was very little existing GIS data that included the information we wanted in the GIS.

This project included visiting the site and collecting GPS coordinates for feature that we felt were important to the GIS. Before we went to the site, we created a Data Dictionary to make the process quicker.

Collecting the GPS data was a welcome break, and allowed us to get some experience using the units. The accuracy of the corrected data was amazing, and features we collected matched our other data very well.

We used Trimble GeoExplorer 3 units. Pathfinder Office (also from Trimble) allows the GPS unit to communicate with the PC. This is how we created the data dictionary, and downloaded data after collecting it. Pathfinder Office also performs differential correction and exports the features to ArcView Shapefiles.
