I love posting anything but what is relevant to the topic, but just looked into the G5.
WOW.
Atually, it’s funny. It’s architecture looks remarkably similar to a dual Opteron system. Only difference is that the G5 has higher memory bandwidth and a PCI-X controller (very cool, but that’ll come soon to Opteron boards as well). Uses Hypertransport to double memory bandwidth just like the Opteron and allows cache sharing between chips and cross-chip DIMM access just like dual Opterons. Same 4GB of memory per chip, too.
Anyway, it’s indesputably cool and would be curious to see it benchmarked against a dual Opteron 1.8 system. Also would be nice if Discreet would build a 64 bit Mac version of 3DSMax and if Apple would charge less than ten thousand dollars for one (which I’m sure won’t be the case).
