Three trees that have lost favor with me in the last 12 months:
- Russian Hawethorn – Crataegus ambigua
- Black Walnut – Juglans nigra
- Douglas Fir – pseudotsuga menziesii

i always knew you were racist
Why douglas fir? and I agree with alan, racist.
I guess explanations for all of them are in order.
The hawthorn, though being attractive for roughly 3 weeks, kills grass, drops berries and dead crap, grows way to thick, and pruning is dangerous with the thorns. And I think the carpenter ants have a symbiotic relationship with the tree.
The Walnut I like most of the year. Its a grand old tree until it produces walnuts, which the squirrels drop on you, or bury in your flower beds or inside the shed. Then, when the leaves finally fall, they kill the grass if you don’t pick them up immediately. They’re toxic.
Douglas Fir seems to be contributing the most to my allergies. Being around the conifers makes me feel like the sofa king. Plus, all my neighbors tree’s windfall ends up in my yard.
Besides – why are you siding with “Loveshack” Alan?
The Evil Vine Maple tops my list right now. Doing trail work I battle trees everyday. Yesterday I got attacked by a “whipping” maple, so I cut down his friend.
I am less anti-tree right now and more anti-wild-clematis.
I am planning a convert operation to remove it from my next-door-neighbor’s yard. Asking her would be too logical.
squirt-gun, diluted curtail.
I agree with you about the black walnut, the toxins that it releases into the ground make it nearly impossible for anything to grow within a hundred feet of it.
One that I have always loved is the Weeping Willow. Did you know that it is a weed?
Its a weed if you say it is :)
But seriously – I didn’t know they were considered a weed by folks. I guess it makes sense since they’re such water hogs.
