National Park Bullshit

This weekend a group of our friends congregated at Staircase Campground in Olympic national park for the 3rd year in a row. Previously, we’d camped a few weeks earlier in the season before the campground officially opened (toilets, etc) and started charging fees. The campground is great, the area is beautiful, and the lack of other people is a big draw considering the size and enthusiasm of our group. This year’s gathering was to be slightly smaller due to other family engagements.

The campsite was quite a bit busier this year, but we managed to get 3 sites together. Unfortunately, we were flanked by some family campers on one side and by idiot teen losers who couldn’t be more excited about underage drinking and Led Zeppelin. Later that night, the high-schoolers and an out-of-place gangsta got into a confrontation over some “property” that had been “stold.” There was a fair amount of heated discussion and later some discussion of threats.

The next day we had a good time at the lake and were surprised to get stopped when returning to the camp. The rangers asked all of our party for IDs and basically asked us to leave because of some complaints from other campers. It is true that some noise did come from the vicinity of our camp, but most of it was not from our group. Although we tried to explain the situation, we realized they weren’t going to listen and we excused ourselves from the campground. The high-school kids also got kicked out. But they deserved it. For us, this was the smallest, cleanest, and quietest group ever formed.

So we camped off the road in the state forest. And had a good time. And didn’t have to pay $10 per car. And get no respect from the Man.

  1. I was totally put off by the “Ranger” doing her “Ranger” Routine. Her points were for the most part valid, but they had nothing to do with us. The extremely condescending tone she put down was unexcusable. I like the “new spot” though and had a great time bushwacking to the lake. We did a great job cleaning the place up too, leaving it at the least, 85% better than before we ever got there.
