Though I doubt its part of some great direct marketing scheme, I can’t help but feel that dog treats we’ve been giving Barley are trying to feed my desire for a Jetta TDI Wagon. There’s just something I can’t put my finger on…
Would it be so bizarre to think that someone is watching and pulling a lever somewhere that releases the dog treat box with something specific to each customer? Maybe those RFID tags are saying something about me that I’m not aware of. Regardless, if I even had clothes purchased recently, I’m sure my tags have given the lever puller little hope.
Good choice, my man. Gotta love diesel. Come to think of it, gotta love ANY engine technology that begs for turbocharging. Throw natural gas in there, too, for it’s high octane and rotaries (although Mazda’s doing just fine at atmospheric with the current Renesis iteration) for it’s combustion chamber shape and flow-paths and overall small engine size.
My only problem with the Jetta wagon is that every time I got into it, I would be wishing that I was in an A6 Quattro Avant (or S6 Quattro Avant if I could come anywhere nears having that kind of dough). They’re built on a similar platform (I believe they used to be the same, but recently branched off) and it would just be too close not to let the desire wander. The Audis are just so much prettier, better engineered, stronger, more stable and grippy, etc. They are far and away the best wagons on the planet for not much of a price jump over the VW.
Unfortunately, Audi doesn’t see fit to bring their TDIs into the states. That’s just kind of US think overall. In fact, I’m sitting here at work reading the September 2003 issue of Car and Driver and they’re talking about an upcoming Jaguar that will be the first ever diesel-powered Jag. They’re doing it to bolster European sales. What’s most interesting about the article are these stats: 64% of Audis sold in Europe are diesels and 46% of BMWs sold in Europe are diesels.
Pretty nuts in comparison, eh? Where are our diesel Audis and BMWs? Must we be forced into VWs with the rest of the common folk?
Just kidding around. Are you seriously considering buying one?
Check it out:

Huge list of available diesel engine and driveline combos.
And isn’t it pretty?
If only we had’em here.
