Procedure Library for using the Metadata Collection Tool

The purpose of this procedure library is to discuss the process of collecting Metadata for a dataset using the metatdata collector extension for ArcView. The collector tool simplifies to metadata creation process by simplifying the steps needed to complete metadata.

Prepared by Andy Freed (freed@cc.wwu.edu) on March 15, 2001.

Required: ArcView GIS, Metadata Collector 2.0

Procedure:

Loading Collector Extension:

1.     Open ArcView GIS and load the shape files you are going to create metadata for.

2.     Load the Metadata collection extension by selecting it from the File>Extension menu.

Finding out information:

1.     Before starting the actual collection too, you will need to have determined the proper projection, scale, map units, location, and you will want to know all pertinent information on the creator, and history of the data and its sources. This can be difficult.

Collector Tool:

1.     The collector tool and the Green Book go hand in hand. Keep it available for consultation:

2.     Follow the numbers and the Green book to determine the context in which to write the information.

3.     The contact information for David Davidson can be found on Saldata\geog451\assignment 4\ and is titled sumasdata.txt.

4.     The contact information for the metadata creator should include Western Washington University and Gene Hoerauf.

5.     Save sub-sections for use during later sections. For example, Citation can be reused several times during the process.

HTML File:

Once you have finished your metadata file, save the changes. You will be asked if you want to create an html file. Choose yes.
