Procedure Library for creating a map from a view.

The purpose of this procedure library is to explain how to create a map using the layout feature from a view. This will also include how to add a legend, scale, and other features to that map.

Required: ArcView GIS,

Procedure:

1.     Open ArcView and make all the data you need available. This proclib will use “ex22a” as an example.

2.     If you do not have your feature data open, open it using the add button on the table of contents. See previous Proclibs for details.

3.     Now change to Layout. You want to create a new Layout.

4.     Go to the Layout Menu and select the Properties so you can change the name of the layout to something meaningful.  Also use the Page Setup option of the View menu to select if you want a Landscape or Portrait layout for the page.

5.     Now we will start adding the images and data to the layout. From the tool menu, select the Frame tool. It looks like a planet. Now drag and click a field on the layout that you want the map to reside in.

6.     Now choose the map you want to display from the list, and click OK.

7.     To add a legend, we will select the Legend Tool from the tool menu. Drag a field onto the layout where you want the legend to be. You can move it later if you please.

8.     Select the appropriate legend from the list of options and click OK.

9.     Now lets add a scale bar. Choose the scale bar from the tool menu, and drag a field where you want the scale bar to be. Choose the data you want the scale to represent and click ok.

10.   Now lets add a directional pointer to show the orientation of the map. Use the North Arrow frame tool from the tool menu to drag an area for the compass rose. Choose the compass rose you want and click ok.

11.   To add a title, click on the Text Tool, and type in a title for your map. You can use the pointer tool to resize it.

12.   Finally, use the text tool to add a reference to your data, and the name and date of the creator.

13.   Print your map from the File Menu.
