Procedure Library for Creating Temporary directories and saving to them in Windows.

The purpose of this procedure library is to learn how to create temporary working directories in Windows, how to save files to them from ArcView, and how to then copy the directories from the Temporary folder on the D:\ drive to a zip disk.

Prepared by Andy Freed (freed@cc.wwu.edu) on October 18th, 2000.

Required: ArcView GIS, Zip Disk, Windows Explorer.

Procedure:

  1. Open the Windows NT explorer by going to Start/Programs/Windows NT Explorer.
  2. On the left side, click on the D:\ drive, which is where we will create the temp folder.
  3. On the right side, double click on the folder called temporary. You will now see the Temp folder on the left side, and its contents on the right. On the right side, hold down the right mouse button and click New/Folder and name the folder something memorable. Your Name is a good way to identify the folder.
  4. Now you have the folder created so open ArcView.
  5. From the file menu, select Set Working Directory. Here you will be prompted for a path name. The path name you will use is D:\temp\yourname. Click OK.
  6. Every time you open or save a file, it will now default to here.
  7. Now you are done working so you want to move your files from D:\temp\yourname to your zip disk so you can access it later.
  8. Insert your zip disk, and reopen the Windows NT explorer.
  9. On the left side, select the D:\ drive click on the little plus sign to see the subfolders. Click on Temp.
  10. On the left side you will now see your folder. If you right click on the folder you can select copy.
  11. Now change the right side of the Explorer to the G:\ drive, where the Zip drive is located. Open it up.
  12. Now you can right click on the right side of the explorer and select Paste. Your directory will now appear on the Zip Disk.
  13. To move the files back to the D:\Temp, simply repeat the directions in the reverse order. (mostly).
  14. To delete all the remaining files from the D:\Temp folder, return to the Windows Explorer.
  15. Click the D: drive, and click the little plus sign to maximize the folder list. Select the Temp folder.
  16. On the right side of the window you will see your folder. Hold down the right mouse button on top of the folder and click Delete. Your file will be moved to the Recycle Bin.
  17. Go to the desktop and right click on the recycle bin and select Empty Recycle Bin to delete it permanently.
  18. Don’t forget to log out of your computer and remove your zip disk.
